ORANGUTAN CONSERVATION IN COLLABORATION WITH YAYASAN SAYAP PROJECT INDONESIA

The Orangutan Conservation Program was initiated by PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri to address threats to the endangered Sumatran orangutan, caused by habitat destruction, illegal logging, and rising human–wildlife conflict in Gunung Leuser National Park.

To tackle these issues, PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri provided essential patrol equipment to strengthen forest protection efforts and carried out a progressive reforestation program involving the planting of 500 trees. The tree species were selected strategically: fruit trees were planted along the park’s border near local communities to provide food for wildlife and mitigate human–wildlife conflict, while hardwood trees such as meranti and damar were planted inside the national park to support long-term reforestation.

The program will be implemented in stages, with 150 trees planted every two weeks until the target of 500 trees is reached. Directly, it strengthens PT. Oleochemical and Soap Industri’s commitment to sustainability, while indirectly it enhances the company’s reputation and relationships with stakeholders, including NGOs, communities, and government agencies.

Program Orangutan Conservation diinisiasi oleh PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri sebagai bentuk kepedulian terhadap kelestarian lingkungan dan satwa, khususnya orangutan Sumatera yang merupakan spesies endemik dan dilindungi. Ancaman berupa degradasi habitat, pembalakan liar, dan konflik satwa–manusia telah mengganggu keseimbangan ekosistem Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser.

Melalui kegiatan ini, PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri berupaya memberikan solusi nyata: mendukung ranger patrol dengan peralatan yang memadai serta melaksanakan rehabilitasi hutan melalui penanaman 500 pohon. Jenis pohon yang dipilih mencerminkan tujuan strategis: pohon buah ditanam di perbatasan kawasan hutan dengan pemukiman warga sebagai penyedia pakan satwa dan langkah mitigasi konflik, sedangkan pohon keras seperti meranti dan damar ditanam di kawasan inti hutan sebagai upaya reforestasi jangka panjang.

Program ini dilaksanakan secara bertahap dengan penanaman 150 pohon setiap dua minggu. Secara langsung, program memperkuat komitmen keberlanjutan PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri, dan secara tidak langsung meningkatkan reputasi perusahaan di mata stakeholder, sekaligus mempererat hubungan dengan masyarakat dan NGO.

Project targets

The program focuses on the CSR pillar of Environment by reforestation and tree planting and social development by supporting ranger patrol capacity, empowering NGOs and benefits local communities.

The beneficiaries include :

• Ranger patrol teams, equipped with proper tools.
• Local communities in Bukit Lawang, who benefit from a sustainable forest ecosystem.
• The Leuser forest ecosystem and wildlife, particularly the endangered Sumatran orangutan

Program ini berfokus pada pilar CSR di bidang Lingkungan yaitu melalui reforestasi dan penanaman pohon dan social melalui dukungan peralatan ranger patrol.

Sasaran utama dari kegiatan adalah :

• Ranger patrol yang memperoleh dukungan peralatan.
• Masyarakat lokal Bukit Lawang yang merasakan manfaat hutan yang lebih lestari.
• Ekosistem hutan Leuser & satwa liar, khususnya orangutan Sumatera.

Objectives

The main objectives are to:

1. Strengthen forest protection by supporting ranger patrols.
2. Restore degraded forest areas by planting 500 trees.
3. Enhance collaboration between the company, NGOs, and local communities.
4. Reinforce PT. Oleochem & Soap Industri’s commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Tujuan utama program ini adalah:

1. Memperkuat perlindungan hutan dengan mendukung kinerja ranger patrol.
2. Melaksanakan reforestasi melalui penanaman 500 pohon secara bertahap.
3. Meningkatkan sinergi antara perusahaan, NGO, dan komunitas lokal.
